The plot of the film is a theatre of the absurd played with a straight face. This is exactly the kind of film that draws you in, on the one hand, with the obvious naivety and even stupidity of its characters, who think far too highly of themselves. And on the other, with an intricate storyline in which the characters’ high opinion of themselves collides with “serious matters”, producing powerful special effects of events and forcing the viewer’s brain to think and analyse intensely so as not to lose the thread of the narrative and to build cause-and-effect links in an unfolding story that claims to be serious and significant.
Through it all there is a thick aura of idiocy, in which the viewer, too, becomes an idiot the moment their perception slips into the quagmire of the absurd, as soon as they begin to sympathise with the characters or try to fit what is happening into some kind of logic. All these effects of searching for an even remotely stable position, in attempts to understand what on earth is going on, provoke laughter, first and foremost at oneself.
Yet this fun is overshadowed by the realisation of the fatal consequences of misunderstanding. And the quintessence of the film is the exchange between two characters at the end:
– “The case is closed. Now we must do everything possible to make sure this never happens again.”
– “To make sure what never happens again???”
