"THE DOUBLE IN THE CUBE"
The project demonstrates one of the semantic dimensions of the story "The Doppelganger" through a geometric form — a model of splitting in Golyadkin's soul as an attempt to alienate his own negative personality traits (the black cube) from the outside. This tactic creates the illusion of reality, which is demonstrated in the form of a mirror center of one of the cubes. The persistent movement of the protagonist towards the complication of an alternative reality is described in the story in the form of the uncontrolled appearance of numerous copies of the "bad" Golyadkin, in the project "Double in a cube" it is shown through an appeal to the logic of mathematical progression and reflected in the name of the project as an indication of the dynamics and rate of increase of mental illness.
The project consists of book pages of two identical copies of the story, folded in origami technique into small cubes. Two larger cubes are assembled from them — literally two works. Each cube, consisting of many of the same cubes, reflects Dostoevsky's idea of a multitude of Golyadkins, which are one and only Golyadkin.
The cubes are identical in appearance, but they have fundamental differences. The core of one of them is a black cube, and the other is a missing cube in the form of a niche, the walls of which are mirrored. The black cube is on Mr. Golyadkin's side: he does not see it in himself. The doppelganger is modeled as a mirror into which Golyadkin looks, but does not recognize himself.
